  1. A shogun in Japanese history, is a title of 
  2. a series of military strongmen 1192-1868 who 
  3. relegated the emperor's role to that of 
  4. figurehead. Technically an imperial 
  5. appointment, the office was treated as 
  6. hereditary and was held by the Minamoto clan 
  7. 1192-1219, by the Ashikaga 1336-1573, and by 
  8. the Tokugawa 1603-1868.
