A shogun in Japanese history, is a title of
a series of military strongmen 1192-1868 who
relegated the emperor's role to that of
figurehead. Technically an imperial
appointment, the office was treated as
hereditary and was held by the Minamoto clan
1192-1219, by the Ashikaga 1336-1573, and by
the Tokugawa 1603-1868.
